Preventing online gambling addiction: briefing for state policymakers Feb 3rd
Effective policy interventions to reduce gambling addiction and bankruptcies.
CASPR will soon launch a new program focused on online gambling addiction. We’ve started writing on the topic and we believe there is an important strategic contribution we can make in this area.
This Tuesday, CASPR is hosting an online briefing for state legislative offices and others interested in how states can effectively prevent addiction in an era of 24/7 gambling on our phones.
The online gambling industry pushes states to focus on ways to help people after they’ve become addicted to gambling while the gambling companies focus on ways to get more people addicted. This is, of course, an extremely ineffective public policy and is predictably destroying the financial futures for young men and families in every state that has legalized online gambling.
We will discuss policies that can actually prevent addictions and reduce bankruptcy rates. CASPR will soon be publishing draft legislation and offering other technical support to states.
Experts, from across the political spectrum, include:
Charles Fain Lehman, Manhattan Institute
Jonathan Cohen, American Institute for Boys and Men
Harry Levant, PHAI
Nicholas Reville, Center for Addiction, Policy, and Research
